Going Compostal
As noted in a previous post, Tourism Vancouver Island has implemented a mixed recycling program. But we’ve also taken that a step further and for over half a year now we have been composting as well. In our break room we have a large (and sealable–thank goodness) where staff are able to deposit their compostable waste. Then roughly on a weekly basis we have a couple of staff volunteers that take it to Nanaimo Food Share, who were kind enough to accept our compost.
If you aren’t sure you want to bother with composting keep these facts in mind:
- At least 30% of garbage is organic materials such as food scaps
- Compost reduces erosion by improving soil structure
- Diverting organic wastes from landfill sites helps to conserve landfill space and to reduce the production of leachate and methane gas
So overall it isn’t difficult to setup a composting program, and aside from helping out the environment you can also maybe help a local charity. Go ahead and give composting a chance!
