Back to Basics – Easy Green

In the Tourism Industry, hotels were certainly one of the first sectors to take environmental initiatives. I’m thinking in particular to the “please leave dirty towels in the tub” movement. This certainly was not a revolutionary idea, but does have significant environmental and cost saving benefits.

So this got me to thinking what other “back to basics” solutions are out there but are so common we don’t even realize they are green initiatives? Additionally, what other basic yet beneficial solutions are out there for tourism businesses?

I’ll start the discussion off with an idea I first saw in a Malaysian hotel…you had to put your hotel room card in a little holder by the door in order to keep the lights on in your room. I thought it a brilliant power saving idea, well after the lights going out on me a couple of times leaving me in the middle of the room in total darkness. But I soon figured out how it worked and came to think of it as a brilliant, almost too obvious to believe I hadn’t seen it before, power saving solutions.
