Microgeneration – Macro Solution?

Not familiar with microgeneration? That’s alright, it is far from mainstream. In fact your spell checker probably doesn’t recognize the word yet! But it is important so you may want to read on.

Microgeneration is the generation of zero or low-carbon heat and power by individuals, small businesses and communities to meet their own needs. This is accomplished by various means means including solar, wind, and biomass power.

And actually the funny thing is it isn’t entirely a new idea–far from it in fact. Up until the 1920s large numbers of people worldwide, particularly in rural North America were producing power for their own consumption. Then things changed and governments started playing a larger roll in the building and managing of power.

Additionally, microgeneration very much fits the attitude and perspective of the world’s newest generations. Think of file sharing, YouTube, social networking, all keys of today’s youth, and you realized microgeneration fits right in.

Regulations for microgeneration vary signification by jurisdiction, so be sure to check your local laws before pursuing it for your home or business. But hopefully the laws allow you to take this on because getting “off the grid” could be extremely beneficial financially and environmentally.
