Green Tourism at ITB

In case you didn’t think experiential travel, green tourism, and eco-tourism were important and rapidly growing components to global tourism ITB, the world’s largest travel trade fair should change your mind. At this year’s convention, sustainable tourism played a large roll, the largest it ever has.

Two of the key themes from ITB are listed below. This will hopefully assist you in keeping up with the latest trends in this still relatively young and rapidly changing sector of tourism.

  1. Green StandardsAs eco-tourism has grown in popularity, reliable standards for eco-tourism related activities and general environmental standards become increasingly important. Consequently, it is important to investigate any applicable standards for your business, and also to keep an eye out for developing standards.
  2. Air Travel & Local ActivitiesAir travel is well known to be the key contributor to tourism related greenhouse gases. Accordingly, airlines are keen to offer offset programs that enable travelers to diminish their impact. However, tourism businesses at the destination can also be of assistance by offering low environmental impact opportunities that are either carbon neutral or that further offset emissions created from travel.
